How a possum one way door works

A possum one way door is a hinged flap or tunnel fitted over the hole a possum uses. It swings outwards, so the possum can push its way out to feed at night, but the flap will not open from the outside.

It is the most humane way to get a possum out of a building, because the animal is never caught or handled. It leaves on its own schedule, finds that it cannot get back in, and moves to a tree or a nest box nearby.

A one way door only works if it is on the right hole and every other hole is closed. Fit it on a gap the possum is not using, or leave a second gap open, and the possum simply walks around it. That is why we spend most of the first visit on the roofline, not on the door.

The door stays on for a few nights. Once the roof has been quiet we come back, take it off and seal that final opening with mesh, timber or a proper tile repair.

  • Door matched to the roof type
  • Fixed so it cannot be pushed in
  • Removed and the hole closed for you

Rotten or chewed timber at the edge of the roof.

Box gutter ends

Open ends on newer homes and townhouses.

Pipe and flue openings

Gaps around plumbing vents and heater flues.

Questions

Possum One Way Door Installation questions

Still have a question?

Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.

Call 0435 072 221
How long does a possum one way door stay on?

Usually three to seven nights. We remove it once there has been no movement in the roof for a couple of nights.

What if there are two possums?

A one way door lets out every possum using that entry. Each one leaves when it goes out to feed.

Can I buy a one way door and fit it myself?

You can, but it must go on the active hole and every other gap must be sealed first, which is the hard part. A door on the wrong hole does nothing.

Will a one way door hurt the possum?

No. The possum pushes through the flap on its own. It is never caught or handled.

What happens to the possum after it leaves?

It moves to a tree, a dense shrub or a nest box nearby. Some owners put up a possum box in the garden to give it somewhere to go.

Do you remove the door afterwards?

Yes. The return visit is included, and we seal the opening properly once the door is off.

Ready to get the possum out?

Humane removal, every gap sealed and a 12 month written guarantee on sealed points.
