Getting a possum out of your roof the right way
A possum in the roof is the most common call we take, and it is almost always a common brushtail that has found a lifted tile, a gap under the eaves or a gutter it can climb.
The fix is not to block the hole while it is inside. A trapped possum panics, chews a new way out through the eaves or ceiling, or dies in the roof, and then you have a smell problem as well.
We find the hole it is actually using, fit a one way door over it and let the possum leave on its own when it goes out to feed after dark. While the door does its work we close every other gap, so when we take the door off and seal that last opening there is no way back in.
Most Melbourne houses have more than one weak point. Bungalows have gaps where the ridge capping meets the tiles, weatherboards open up at the gable vents, and newer estates often have unsealed box gutter ends. We check all of them, not just the obvious one.
- Roof void checked where it is safe to enter
- Species confirmed before anything is fitted
- Written price before work starts
Signs of a possum living in the roof
These are the signs that separate a possum from rats, birds or a loose sheet of iron moving in the wind.
Thumping at dusk and dawn
Heavy footsteps when it leaves after dark and again when it returns before sunrise.
Hissing and screeching
Loud guttural calls, often two possums arguing over the same roof space.
Ammonia smell
Urine soaks into the insulation and the smell drifts into the room below.
Stains on the ceiling
Yellow or brown marks spreading across the plaster under the nest.
Disturbed tiles or flashing
Slipped tiles, bent flashing or chewed fascia where it squeezes in.
Droppings near the roofline
Pellet droppings in the gutter, on the deck or along the fence top.

How we remove a possum from your roof
Five stages, in this order, so the possum leaves unharmed and the roof is closed behind it.
- 1
Find the entry
Fresh rub marks, fur and droppings show which gap is the active one.
- 2
Fit the one way door
Mounted over the entry so it opens outwards only.
- 3
Seal the rest
Mesh, timber and tile repairs on every other gap.
- 4
Wait for quiet
A few nights with no movement means the roof is empty.
- 5
Close and report
Door off, last hole sealed, photos of every point sent to you.
What to do about a possum in the roof tonight
Leave the entry open. If you can see the hole, do not stuff it with rags or foam while the possum may be inside. A blocked possum will try to chew its way out, often through the softest point in your ceiling.
Keep pets out of the roof space and away from the eaves at night. A cornered brushtail scratches and bites, and dogs often end up at the vet after trying to reach one.
Write down when you hear it. Times and the room it sits above help us find the nest quickly, which shortens the visit.
Do not put baits or traps in the roof. Possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and a trapped brushtail can only be released on the same property within 50 metres, after sunset.

Possum in Roof Removal questions
Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.
Call 0435 072 221How do I remove a possum from the roof?
Fit a one way door over the hole it uses and let it leave at night, then seal every other gap before closing the last one. Blocking the hole while it is inside, or setting traps, causes more problems than it solves.
How long does it take to get a possum out of the roof?
The first visit takes one to three hours. The one way door usually stays on for three to seven nights, then we return to remove it and seal the final opening.
Can a possum get into the ceiling from the roof?
Not usually, but a stressed possum can damage the cornice or a manhole cover, and urine soaks through to the plaster. If you see a possum inside the house, close the room door and call us.
Is a possum in the roof dangerous?
Not to people directly, but urine and droppings soak the insulation, stain ceilings and smell, and possums sometimes chew wiring insulation. The longer one stays, the bigger the clean up.
Why does the possum keep coming back?
Because only one hole was dealt with. Brushtails are territorial and test the whole roofline, so every gap has to be closed, not just the one it was using.
Do you remove possums from wall cavities too?
Yes. A possum in a wall cavity or under the floor is handled the same way: we find where it gets in, fit a door there and seal the rest.
Is it a possum or a rat in my roof?
Possums are heavy and you hear thumping, mostly at dusk and dawn. Rats are lighter, faster and scurry through the night. Possum droppings are larger pellets than rat droppings.
Ready to get the possum out?
Humane removal, every gap sealed and a 12 month written guarantee on sealed points.
