Finding and removing a dead possum
A dead possum in the roof or a wall cavity announces itself with a heavy, sweet smell that gets worse in warm weather, often with flies gathering at a window or a light fitting.
The smell does not tell you exactly where it is. Air moves through roof spaces and wall cavities, so the strongest smell is often a few metres from the possum. We trace it by following the odour, checking for flies and maggots, and looking at the places possums nest.
Once we find it, the possum is bagged and removed, the insulation and nesting material under it are taken out, and the area is treated to break down the odour rather than mask it.
If the possum is inside a wall, we explain the options before we cut anything. Often it can be reached from the roof space or the sub floor, and if a small access hole is needed we tell you where and how it will be patched.
- We tell you before any cutting
- Odour treated at the source
- Entry point found so it does not happen again

How long does a dead possum smell last?
Left alone, a dead possum usually smells for two to four weeks, longer in cool weather when it breaks down slowly and stronger in summer. The smell soaks into insulation and timber, so it can linger after the possum itself has dried out.
Air fresheners and open windows only mask it. Removing the possum and the soaked material under it is what stops the smell, and an odour treatment at the source shortens the tail.
A dead possum also attracts flies, and the next possum to find the same gap may move straight in. Finding how it got in is part of every job.

Call 0435 072 221Who removes dead possums in Melbourne?
We do. We trace the smell, remove the possum from the roof, wall or sub floor, take out soaked insulation and treat the odour.
How do you find a dead possum in the wall?
By following the smell, checking where flies gather and looking at likely nesting spots. Most can be reached from the roof space or sub floor without cutting.
How much does dead possum removal cost?
Dead possum removal starts from $249 including GST. Any wall access that needs cutting and patching is quoted before we start.
Is a dead possum smell harmful?
It is unpleasant rather than dangerous for most people, but it attracts flies and the soaked insulation should be removed rather than left.
Can I leave the possum to dry out?
You can, but expect two to four weeks of smell, flies and stained insulation. Removing it is quicker and cleaner.
Why did the possum die in my roof?
Usually old age, illness, a fall or being trapped when a gap was blocked. Sealing the entry stops another one moving in.
Ready to get the possum out?
Humane removal, every gap sealed and a 12 month written guarantee on sealed points.
