Why the roof needs cleaning after a possum leaves

Getting the possum out stops new damage, but the mess it left behind stays: a nest of leaves and shredded insulation, droppings, and batts soaked with urine.

Possum urine is the main problem. It soaks into insulation and the top of the ceiling plaster, smells of ammonia in warm weather, and leaves yellow to brown stains on the ceiling below. Droppings build up around the nest and along the routes the possum used.

Roof sanitation means removing the nest and droppings, taking out insulation that is soaked or compressed, treating the area with a sanitiser and deodoriser, and replacing the insulation so the room below stays warm.

It is usually done as part of a removal job, once the possum is out and the roof has been sealed. Doing it before the roof is sealed is a waste of money, because the next possum moves straight back onto a clean bed.

Ceiling stains

Can possum urine stains on the ceiling be fixed?

Yes, once the source is gone. After the roof is cleaned and the insulation replaced, a stained ceiling usually needs a stain blocking primer before repainting, otherwise the mark bleeds back through ordinary paint.

If the plaster has gone soft or sagged, that section may need replacing. We point out any area like that during the inspection so you can plan the repair.

Painting over a stain while the possum is still in the roof is wasted money: the urine keeps coming and the stain returns within weeks.

Questions

Possum Nest Removal questions

Still have a question?

Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.

Call 0435 072 221
How do you remove a possum nest from the roof?

The nest, droppings and soaked insulation are bagged and removed, the area is sanitised and deodorised, and new insulation is laid where needed.

Does possum urine smell go away?

Not on its own while the soaked insulation is still there. Removing it and treating the area is what stops the smell.

Is possum poo in the roof dangerous?

It should not be left. Droppings and old nest material can carry bacteria and mites, so it is removed with protective gear and the area is sanitised.

Do you replace the insulation?

Yes, where we remove it. The cost depends on the area, and we quote it after the inspection.

When should sanitation be done?

After the possum is out and the roof is sealed, so the clean area stays clean.

Can you fix the ceiling stain?

We clean the source. The stain itself usually needs a stain blocking primer and paint, and soft plaster may need replacing.

Ready to get the possum out?

Humane removal, every gap sealed and a 12 month written guarantee on sealed points.
