What a good possum catcher actually does
Most people searching for a possum catcher or a possum man picture a cage and a drive to the bush. In Victoria that is not allowed, and it is rarely the right way to solve the problem anyway.
A possum catcher in Melbourne has two jobs: get the possum out of the building without harming it, and make sure it cannot get back in. The capture is the easy part. The sealing is what you are really paying for.
Our first choice is always a one way door, because the possum leaves by itself and never has to be handled. A cage is used only where a door cannot work, for example a possum living inside a room, a garage or a shed with no single exit point.
When a brushtail is caught in a cage it must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture. That is why the sealing work matters so much: the possum stays in your garden, but your roof is closed.
- Species checked before anything is set
- Cage checked on the day, never left overnight unchecked
- Released after dark on your block
Situations where you need a possum catcher
A possum in the roof
The classic job. Usually solved with a one way door rather than a cage.
A possum inside the house
Trapped in a room, behind a cupboard or in the laundry. We get it out calmly.
A possum in the garage or shed
Sheds have many gaps and no single exit, so a cage can be the right tool here.
A possum in a wall or sub floor
We find where it gets in and exclude it at that point.
Possums fighting on the roof
Usually two brushtails claiming the same roof space at night.
A sick or injured possum
We contain it safely and point you to a wildlife carer or vet.

Possum trapping rules in Victoria, in plain English
Brushtail and ringtail possums are protected wildlife under the Wildlife Act 1975. Under the Governor in Council Order for brushtails living in buildings, a common brushtail may be trapped by the owner or occupier and their family, by building managers and their staff, or by the holder of a Wildlife Controller licence endorsed for possums.
A trapped brushtail must be released on the property where it was caught, no more than 50 metres from the capture point, after sunset on the day of capture. Taking it to a park or the bush is not allowed, and a possum moved into another possum territory rarely survives.
Ringtail possums are not covered by that order, which is another reason a one way door is the normal method for them.

Possum Catcher Melbourne questions
Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.
Call 0435 072 221Can a possum catcher take the possum away?
No. In Victoria a trapped brushtail must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture.
Is a possum man the same as a possum catcher?
Yes, people also say possum man or possum trapper for the same service. What matters is that they work lawfully and seal the building afterwards.
Do you always use a cage?
No. A one way door is our first choice because the possum leaves by itself. A cage is only used where a door cannot work.
What happens to a ringtail possum?
Ringtails are smaller and more easily stressed. They are almost always excluded with a one way door or by sealing gaps once they have left.
Can I trap a possum myself?
An owner or occupier may trap a brushtail living in their building, but it must be released on the same property within 50 metres after sunset, and the gap still needs sealing or it will come straight back.
How quickly can a possum catcher come out?
We book 7 days and often have time the same week. Call with your suburb and we will give you the next available time.
Ready to get the possum out?
Humane removal, every gap sealed and a 12 month written guarantee on sealed points.
